In Memory of Dr. John Darrel BaergenJohn Darrel Baergen went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday night, October 23rd, 2003 at 8:05 PM after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 4th, 1935 in Villa Park, IL to Chaplain & Mrs. John Baergen. On June 18th, 1965, he married Judy Maurine Moss in Rockport, TX. Darrel received his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, his Master of Arts degree from Baylor University, and then his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Denver. His teaching career took him from HSU to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX, then to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX, and then back to Hardin-Simmons University, where he retired in May of 2000. Darrel was a man who exemplified Christ's love for other people. His fun-loving spirit drew people to him, and he had a special way of making anyone in his presence feel important and loved. Other than his heavenly Father, his life was devoted to his wife and children. And oh, how he loved his grandchildren. Survived by his wife, Judy; two sons, John D. Baergen, Jr. and wife, Kara of Dallas, Jeff Baergen and wife, Alisha of Abilene; one daughter, Jennifer Davis and husband, Scott of Houston; five grandchildren, Gracie, Johnny and Audrey Baergen, Rebecca and Rachel Baergen; one sister, Phyllis Brandon of Calvert City, KY; and his mother-in-law, Polly Moss of Abilene. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Melinda Baergen; a sister, Elvira Boyd; and his father-in-law, Fred C. Moss. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Hirsch and his staff for their loving care during the past few years. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to either Dr. Hirsch's Cancer Services Network (P.O. Box 2026, Abilene, TX 79604) ? OR ? Bryan's House (P.O. Box 35868, Dallas, TX 75235), a place for families coping with HIV and AIDS. Bryan was the grandson of Jimmy and Wanda Allen, close friends of Judy and Darrel.
