THE FAMILY HOME, BUT NOT MY OWN
by Gloria Wahl
My epiphany came when my father retired and we all moved to Wisconsin. Parents wanted to "go home" and it dawned on me that this was their family home - I was a foreigner.
In 1994 while looking for local books in a New Orleans store - I happened across Mary Edward Wertsch book. I think I spent most of the train trip back north, reading with my jaw dropped in wonder.
I met in college and married an Army brat -- as an Air Force brat, I count that as proof of my open-mindedness. We made a very conscious decision to 'settle' in Superior WI, making it our hometown. Not the best career decision, but we dove in - politics, community service, etc. Camping, canoeing, sailing - this is the place to be, on the Inland Sea, Superior. Our son spent his entire childhood in the house we brought him home to at birth. Weird.
